Our Values

Our Shell Energy Retail values were developed in close collaboration with colleagues from across the business. Our values are a single, simple way of articulating our core beliefs; the things we want to be known for, and which make Shell Energy Retail unique. Each value is important individually, but they also work together - each one supporting the next. The journey to create our values began some time ago. Colleagues from across the business came together in our Business Involvement Group (BIG) to help create and shape them. Now, in these times of uncertainty and change in our world, it seems ever more important that we collectively choose to believe and uphold values which unify us; a metaphorical North Star. Our values are vital to the success of our business. We have a meaningful purpose - to guide customers to a better energy future - Living our values every day is how we’ll achieve it. By demonstrating every day that we care, we evolve, we deliver and we embrace differences, we each take a collective step forward towards realising our ambition and fulfilling our purpose. Each of us has a role to play in making our values live and breathe, and in doing so, shaping the successful future of Shell Energy Retail. Our colleagues share their stories about what living our values means personally to them. We have recently launched Shine - our business-wide colleague recognition programme. Since its launch, hundreds of colleagues have taken time to send eCards and make Shine recognition award nominations - helping to showcase and celebrate fantastic examples of how our values are being brought to life.

Our Wellbeing

450 million people worldwide are experiencing a mental health issue right now. In fact, the World Health Organisation estimates that as many as one in four people will suffer a mental health issue at some point in their lives. During 2020, our UK charity partner, Mind UK reported significant demand for support through the Coronavirus pandemic. For some, the unique and unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in have exacerbated an existing condition. Others are experiencing mental health challenges to a greater or lesser extent for the first time in their lives. As part of our commitment to making Shell Energy Retail a great place to work, we ran our first Happy Heads campaign in 2020, to help build better understanding about mental health and wellbeing. As part of this campaign, we shared helpful advice, fresh insights and a range of tools and tips to help our colleagues look after their mental health and wellbeing. Some of our colleagues also bravely shared their personal mental health journeys and experiences to help and inspire others. Champion Support We have a growing network of Wellbeing Champions in the UK, Poland and Germany, fully qualified and ready to support their colleagues. The team are first and foremost brilliant listeners, listening without judgement and can provide fantastic support to colleagues experiencing mental health issues and emotional distress. Beyond an initial conversation, our Champions are trained to be able to guide colleagues towards further appropriate help in a crisis. They can also spot the early signs of mental ill health and provide the right advice. We urge all colleagues not to suffer in silence - to reach out if they need some support. No issue is too big or too small and any contact made is treated in the strictest confidence. Finding a work / life balance With many of us working remotely, without the usual commute and more time at home, the risk of burnout as boundaries between professional and personal worlds blur is greater than before, so it’s also of greater importance that we find the time to look after ourselves. It's a familiar scenario to many of us at the moment as we try to manage work, rest and play under one roof. Redefining a healthy work-life balance and a good routine is essential to our wellbeing, but what this looks like will be very personal. We have lots of good practical tips for our colleagues in our Wellbeing Centre. Whatever their circumstances, colleagues will find some great advice. There are also resources and means of support available for colleagues hosted on our Coronavirus Information Hub and Development Portal. During the pandemic we arranged for colleagues who have childcare responsibilities to have access to up to 10 days’ paid leave to take as needed for childcare reasons. These arrangements remain in place. Keeping connected Everyone feels lonely from time to time. For some, the isolation of lockdown has meant that social lives, friends and visiting family has been put on hold. It’s never been more important to treat people with kindness and that means being kind to yourself, too. Whatever your situation, all that happened in 2020 was a lot to process. You might find some days easier than others. Having a tough day doesn't mean you aren't strong and resilient. If you’re feeling anxious, stressed or lonely, try and speak to someone you trust about how you’re feeling. A friend, a family member, your manager, a colleague. Our Executive Team are on hand as well to speak to colleagues and offer support - As a Shell Energy Family, we are all in this together and here to help each other. We also offer colleagues free access to our 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme - qualified people, ready to listen, are just a phone call away and can help with sharing advice, as well as coping mechanisms.

Our Social Investment

Virtual Volunteering In 2019 we launched our volunteering scheme, offering all colleagues the chance to use one day a year to sign up for one of our volunteering events. Since then we’ve been working hard to expand our range of opportunities and find creative ways to do this, while keeping our colleagues and community partners safe during the Coronavirus pandemic. We’ve been working on developing a range of virtual volunteering opportunities and have begun to deliver these, with more planned for 2021. Virtual volunteering means that all colleagues are welcome to sign up, irrespective of location, as the opportunities become available. Thousands raised for our charity partner of the year In 2020, we offered colleagues the opportunity to choose the charity we would support as a business for the next 12 months. Colleagues in the UK overwhelmingly voted to support Mind UK and we have so far raised over £10,000 to support them in the fantastic work they do. Our colleagues in Poland also voted for their own Charity of the Year, with Mimo Wszystko winning the majority of the votes and becoming the focus of our colleagues’ fundraising. As part of our Charity of the Year programme, Shell Energy Retail will match funds raised by colleagues up to £20,000 per year across the business, so that we can make a real difference to our charity partners in their tireless efforts to support vulnerable people in our local communities. Mental health charity Mind UK provides vital support and services to people across the UK, whilst Mimo Wszystko supports adults with learning disabilities, and provides treatment, rehabilitation and education to sick and disabled people across Poland. Every single penny raised by colleagues goes to our chosen charitable organisations and will make a difference. During the past few months, colleagues in the UK have taken part in fancy dress competitions, dyed their hair, hosted quizzes, decorated cakes, learnt to dance, and taken a virtual round trip to our office locations, clocking up virtual miles through logging minutes of physical activity - all in the name of raising as much money as possible for vulnerable people.

Our Development

“Here at Shell Energy Retail, we believe in giving everyone the opportunity to own their personal development and reach their full potential. We created Our Development Portal to give our colleagues the tools and resources they need to get to where they want to be. Whether you need support in your current role or are looking to build your skills in a specific field, the Development Portal enables you to take the driving seat for the next stage in your career development.” John Wrighthouse, Chief People Officer Apprenticeships Our relationship with modern apprenticeships began in 2017 with the introduction of the Government levy pots. Our first venture into using apprenticeships to support our colleagues was in our Customer Operations teams, covering both customer service and team leader capabilities. In September 2019, we launched our first Degree-level apprenticeship in our Business Technology Department. A year later, in September 2020, we brought another group of five apprentices to join us on the same programme. Within four years, these colleagues will progress through a specifically created progression plan, with a role waiting for them at the end of their qualification. We currently offer Apprenticeships in these topics: Customer Service (L2/3) Business Administration (L2/3) Data Analyst Business Analyst Cyber Security Software Tester HR Support Team Management / Leader Operational Management Advanced Credit Controller L&D Practitioner L&D Consultant Coaching Professional Resource Catalogue Our Development Portal also hosts a catalogue of resources, from Data Science and Data Insights, through to MS Office, Project Management and Industry-specific materials. Our Leadership Attributes Our purpose is to guide customers to a better energy future. We want our colleagues to feel inspired, engaged and excited by this purpose. Through our leadership attributes, and associated behaviours, our leaders can provide the strong direction and context needed to make this purpose meaningful - to connect the valuable individual contribution each of our colleagues make every day to the broader role Shell Energy Retail plays in the energy transition, guiding our customers to a better energy future. The Capability Framework At Shell Energy Retail, we believe in empowering and supporting colleagues to achieve their potential to deliver the best outcomes for our customers. You can make a difference throughout your career with us and we take your personal and professional development very seriously. Career progression at Shell Energy Retail is about the right people in the right roles for both the individual and the business. To support this, we introduced our Capability Framework. The Capability Framework allows colleagues to take control of their career progression. It allows colleagues to see what behaviours need to be displayed and what development initiatives are available to support their development of a particular behaviour. As we grow into a mature business, it creates many opportunities to have a varied and fulfilling career - whatever your ambition. Mentoring Here at Shell Energy we believe that Mentoring is a development driven activity. Our Mentoring Partnerships are designed to help colleagues explore their current role and beyond, taking a more holistic approach to career development.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We want Shell Energy Retail to be a truly great place to work - a place where we bring our skills, experience, personalities and differences to create a safe workplace of which we are proud and where our customers love doing business. To this aim we’re adding another - to be one of the most diverse and inclusive employers we can be. Embracing differences is reflected in our core values and is embedded in how we think and feel. It’s right that we enable everyone to be the very best they can be in work and in life. It enriches us all. We are a strong and more successful business for it. We’ve taken steps forward in recent years: we introduced a successful leadership development programme, specifically for women in our business; we’re closing the gender pay gap; and we’re training each senior leader and recruiting manager on how to recognise and respond to unconscious bias. But there is more to do - much more. Our commitment is for each and every one of us to feel at home being ourselves at work, bringing our unique identities, skills and experience, and having the opportunity to succeed, to grow and develop. Our commitments We’ve hosted a number of conversations with colleagues from across the business and have listened to the discussions. Some of these have been difficult to hear. We will continue to listen and respond. We created our Diversity and Inclusion Network to help guide our actions. The first thing the Network did is craft our Commitments and supporting Actions - Commitments which our Executive Team have sponsored. Those resulting Exec commitments are: - To build a business that is representative of our colleagues at all levels - To measure our progress and communicate our performance in achieving our aim These are the short and medium-term steps we are taking - Sponsor an annual Diversity and Inclusion Day, where we learn, speak about and celebrate our differences. - Introduce a redesigned mentoring programme that will support our colleagues in building their confidence and career aspirations, no matter their background - Anyone in our business who is involved in recruiting new colleagues will undertake a certified recruiter programme, which will be launched in January 2021. - Enable every colleague to complete unconscious bias training. - Introduce anonymised applications for both internal and external roles - Introduce a BAME leadership apprenticeship programme for new and existing colleagues. (UK specific) - Introduce a BAME leadership programme to support our future senior leaders in overcoming race barriers and in unlocking career opportunities at Shell Energy Retail. - Introduce an Aspiring Leaders Programme to help a diverse talent pool to progress. Look out for colleague stories in 2021.
