CHILD PROTECTION UNIT SUPERVISOR - Full Time

"The Home Project" (THP), a civil non-profit company, was founded in December 2016 to meet the needs of refugee children who arrive in Greece on their own. It has created and operates shelters for unaccompanied minors in Athens, where holistic child protection services are provided. The project is funded by the National Development Programme.

The project is expected to operate with the co-financing of the European Union from the Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and is expected to last 12 months.

The aim of the project is the operation of Structures in which services will be offered covering the whole range of protection needs of minors, such as food, housing, education, as well as material, psychosocial, medical and legal support, and social integration services. The main guidelines for the services provided relate to the safety and protection of minors, the development of the individual's personality, his or her maturation so that he or she is able to exercise his or her rights in an informed manner and, ultimately, his or her emancipation.

In this context, "The Home Project" announces a full-time Child Protection Unit Supervisor. The selected person will be employed on a 3 month contract with a posiblity of renewal after evaluation. The employee will work on fixed hours, 5 days during the week at the organization's headquarters.

Overview

The Supervisor of the Child Protection Unit (CPU) plays a vital role in supporting the Chief Child Protection Unit (CCPU) supervise the management and operation of the shelters according to THP’s values, ethics and legal regulations. The position entails significant responsibility in overseeing daily operations within the shelters, ensuring that child protection policies are meticulously followed, and that the children’s safety and well-being are prioritized. The role is tasked with the direct supervision of the shelters’ staff and the continuous monitoring of the shelters’ activities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Supervision & Operational oversight

  • Supports shelter staff, providing direction and guidance in daily matters and collaborates closely with the CCPU especially in complex cases
  • Assists CCPU in managing the daily operations of shelters ensuring they are safe, secure and supportive environments for unaccompanied refugee children
  • Supports CCPU to supervise the shelter coordinators to ensure consistent and effective implementation of child protection policies and procedures
  • In cooperation with the CCPU, monitors and evaluates shelters operation to ensure compliance with legal standards and organizational policies
  • Upon consultation with the CCPU, addresses any complaints against a staff member or volunteer and forwards the complaint or allegation to the appropriate direction for investigation
  • In cooperation with the CCPU manages, training assign and evaluate the THP volunteer team
  • In coordination with the CCPU, organizes group and individual sessions with children for damage restoration and conducts initial investigations for possible abuses, suspicions or testimonies of harmful behavior
  • Is familiar with and stays informed about major protection issues related to the residents
  • Regularly participates in trainings on child protection issues and disseminates the acquired knowledge to employees and management
  • Participates in team, supervisory and administrative meetings as and when required
  • Identifies areas for improvement within shelter operations and shares information with CCPU
  • Receives and records confidential information from resident child or employee who may have a concern or wishes to report an incident of harm, in accordance with THP’s protection policies and procedures
  • Supports CCPU in evaluating the potential risks for activities involving the children staying in the shelters
  • Maintains continuous collaboration and communication with all departments of THP aiming at the smooth operation of the shelters and ensuring confidentiality of personal data for all sheltered children and staff members

Educational programs

  • Maintains regular communication with private schools, the Child Protection Unit and the Shelters in regards to matters related to academic and psychosocial aspects
  • Monitors the financial statements of the educational programs (Youth to Youth & scholarships in the US) funded directly by THP
  • Manages and fulfils bureaucratic procedures related to school activities (excursions, declarations, registrations, scholarship documents, ao)
  • Participates in school activities including being physically present on Saturdays at the schools to solidify good relationships and provide immediate feedback on the collaboration
  • Is physically present in parent and guardian update events and grade pickups

Scholarship Programs in Greece and abroad

  • Monitors all scholarship recipients both within and outside Greece
  • Continuously monitors children who now live abroad and ensures full coverage of all their needs (issuance of bank accounts, visa applications, residence permits, etc)
  • Supports children with university application submission
  • Provides continuous counselling support to children allocated abroad

Volunteers & Interns

  • Communicates directly with the Shelters to assess needs and contacts volunteers accordingly
  • Keeps continuous contact with all volunteers regarding their participation and provides them regular feedback ensuring smooth operations
  • Schedules appointments and interviews with all prospective volunteers
  • Organizes meetings and interviews for internship candidates together with the Chief Child Protection Unit Officer
  • Collects all documents and monitors bureaucratic procedures for universities collaborating with THP

Policies & Procedures

  • Ensures that all protection policies and procedures are up to date and properly implemented
  • Ensures that all staff, volunteers and other personnel of THP are informed about the policies and procedures and know what to do

Reporting

  • Maintains accurate records and documentation of shelter data, activities and incidents
  • Prepares reports on shelter operations to CCPU as and when required

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field
  • A Master's degree in a related field can be advantageous

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven experience of at least 3 years in social work preferably within the NGO sector
  • Relevant institutional knowledge and expertise will be considered an asset
